Amaryllis and Bananas was painted the year I had Amaryllis in the garden at
Fairbanks Ranch. All of the flowers came from my garden and I like to
organize my shapes and colors of flowers to match the vase. The granite counter
is shiny and highly reflective. It created an energetic wet clean feeling in the
foreground. I liked the natural lighting that occurred each day in my kitchen
where I painted this piece. I like to give the men who see this, a reason to
like it as well, so I always give them something to eat. "A way to a man's heart
is through the stomach," or so they say. My husband loves bananas and the
bananas wrap around the vase and creates a composition that sends your focal
point back around in a circular loop at the base of this painting and then
around to the cake that also is round and sends your eye back upwards to the
Amaryllis. This series of circular loops keep you from exiting the painting and
the stopping and resting spots remain to be the open flower heads.
